NPIs, intervention, and collectivity

چکیده
Negative polarity items are subject to so-called intervention effects (Linebarger 1980, 1987). Specifically, they unacceptable in the immediate scope of certain non-downward-entailing operators, even if occur a (higher) downward-entailing operator. By studying behavior any configurations with collective predicates, we provide new empirical arguments that descriptive condition concerning must be stated reference content clausal constituents which NPIs may occur, and not merely operators c-commanding them. This is line recent for environment-based formulations NPI licensing conditions (e.g., Homer 2008, Gajewski 2011). We conclude by discussing how fits some theories (especially Guerzoni 2006, Chierchia 2013). EARLY ACCESS

Equatives, Measure Phrases and NPIs
Standard semantic accounts of the equative ascribe it an ‘at least’ meaning, deriving an ‘exactly’ reading when necessary via scalar implicature. I argue for a particular formulation of this scalar implicature account which considers that (i) equatives license NPIs in their internal arguments, and (ii) equatives whose internal arguments are measure phrases (MPs) are, in contrast to clausal equa...
متن کاملLicensing strong NPIs
This paper investigates the differences in distribution between weak and strong NPIs in English. It is proposed that both weak and strong NPIs are licensed by Downward Entailing (DE) operators; but that weak NPIs only pay attention to the truth-conditional content of their licensers, while strong NPIs must pay attention to nontruthconditional meaning as well in their search for a DE licenser. T...

Two important pieces of nuclear structure are many-body collective deformations and single-particle spin-orbit splitting. The former can be well-described microscopically by simple SU(3) irreps, but the latter mixes SU(3) irreps, which presents a challenge for large-scale, ab initio calculations on fast modern computers. Nonetheless, SU(3)-like phenomenology remains even in the face of strong m...
متن کاملQuantifying collectivity
In biological function emerges from the interactions of components with only partially aligned interests. An example is the brain-a large aggregation of neurons capable of producing unitary, coherent output. A theory for how such aggregations produce coherent output remains elusive. A first question we might ask is how collective is the behavior of the components? Here we introduce two properti...
متن کاملContext, Collectivity and Emptiness
The paper investigates a dynamic alternative to plural e-type strategies, which is general enough to model the truth-conditional as well as the dynamic aspects of both increasing and non-increasing quantifiers. It combines two proposals for plural dynamic semantics: (i) atom predication denotes a set of assignments and set predication denotes a set of sets of assignments and (ii) a witness cond...
